Simeogieme: Mary (Femina Madre)

This collection was unveiled at Africa Fashion Week London. This latest collection called “Femina Madre”, is inspired by my mother who sadly passed away in 2021. With the Femina Madre collection, I wanted to capture my Mum’s essence and spirit, which was kind, light and free. She lit up the room wherever she was. She was a strong woman, but also very feminine, warm and kind. I decided on free flowing designs in this collection to portray her free spirit and with a play on soft feminine colour prints to portray the awesome light that she carried. For the prints used to create the fabric, I digitally designed some, while the others were paintings I did using a paint brush and some acrylic paint on a paint pad. I felt her presence as I remembered her motherly love while I immersed myself in my painting exercise to create this art.

I was blessed by and I’m who I am today because of my mother’s love, so Femina Madre is a tribute to my mother Margaret Saibu.”
